How Much FTP?

How Much FTP Traffic Comes and Goes from Your z/OS Systems?

FTP clients and servers are entirely common and readily used on almost all z/OS systems. Even in organizations that “require” other, more secure, file transfer protocols, FTP is often the users' tool of choice. It's simple. It's familiar. It's widely understood.

So just how much FTP traffic comes and goes from your z/OS systems?

You may be shocked.

If you're in charge of security, you may be alarmed. And for good reason.

Here's how to log your z/OS FTP traffic:

  1. Log FTP traffic to the z/OS System Management Facility (SMF).
A small, simple change to TCP/IP stack configuration will generate SMF 119 records for the FTP client.
Another small, simple change to FTP server configuration will generate SMF 119 records for the server.
For sample code, please click here.
  2. Contact SDS for JCL that will filter and sort those SMF records into a dataset.
  3. Transfer the dataset to SDS technical support. We will analyze it and return FTP traffic reports to you.

SDS provides these summary reports of FTP traffic as a courtesy. We want to help you understand your FTP environment, and your FTP risks.

Our statistical program can report to you…

  • FTP transfers by user, IP address, or subnet
  • Numbers of FTP sessions and transfers
  • Bytes transfered in and out; by hour, day, month
