Update Notice, 7 December 2017:
The content on this page does NOT apply for all users of VIP 8.2+ or for those using JNLP with VFTP 3.1+. Any browser should work for these product versions.
Update Notice, 21 March 2017:
Firefox 52 and up will not work with VIP 8.1 and lower, VFTP 3.0 and lower (if not using JNLP), or VNAC 5.0 and lower (if not using JNLP) because support has been discontinued for the NPAPI. See details below at Browsers & Versions.
Browsers & Versions
*NOTE: this information is NOT applicable for VIP 8.2+. Also, these browser considerations are NOT applicable for VFTP 3.1+ if using JNLP.
Firefox is available free of charge at www.mozilla.com
Firefox 52 and up will not work with VIP, VFTP, or VNAC because support has been discontinued for the NPAPI (except for Flash); the NPAPI is used by the Java plugin. An ESR (Extended Support Release) version of Firefox 52 will continue to support the Java plugin until early 2018. You can download the Firefox ESR at https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/. The 32-bit ESR is required; the 64-bit version is not supported. Future releases of VIP, VNAC, and VFTP will no longer require the Java plugin.
SDS does not support the Chrome browser as a client for SDS VitalSigns products (except for product levels noted above), because Chrome does not support Java Applets. See How do I use Java with…Chrome and NPAPI plugins don’t work on Chrome.
SDS does not support Opera as a client for VitalSigns products because Opera is not widely enough in use to merit testing. VitalSigns will probably work with Opera. We just don’t test it.
Internet Explorer 11 can look like Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9…
For backward compatibility, any version of IE after IE 7 can be configured to look and behave like an earlier version. That is why a test of browser configuration can return IE 7, even though Help > About says IE 11. That compatibility mode can be changed in two places:
- Press the F12 key. See the menu item Emulation
- Select Tools > Compatibility View settings
